Tea has been rooted in Chinese culture for over 4,000 years. The tea plant is native to Southwest China and spread throughout Asia by way of Buddhist monks. During the 1600's the Dutch East India Company started importing tea to Europe where it quickly became popular in countries like Holland, Germany, Britain and France. In 1773, the Boston Tea Party broke out due to Britain's high taxation on the American colonist which would ignite the American Revolution. During the 1800's, trade between the Chinese and British empires became so disputed that the British would smuggle out tea plants from China to grow tea them in the Darjeeling and Assam regions of India.
